The waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is a simple but powerful indicator of health risk. It compares the size of your waist to your hips, providing insight into how fat is distributed in your body. People who carry more fat around their waist (apple shape) have a higher risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and other metabolic conditions than those who carry fat around their hips (pear shape).
WHR = Waist Circumference / Hip CircumferenceDivide your waist measurement by your hip measurement. A higher ratio indicates more abdominal fat relative to hip fat. The World Health Organization considers a WHR above 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women as indicating abdominal obesity and increased health risk.
